· One way to do use your own words is to keep the basic sentence structure but use synonyms.
· Remember that it is impossible and unnatural to change every single word, so just change a few.
e.g. The diagram shows the stages involved in the process of making leather goods.
Re-write as: The images illustrate the steps involved in the production of leather goods.
This is a safe option, as it keeps the same sentence structure.
Watch out!
· Check where you put the ‘s’ when you use ‘the diagram showS‘ (3rd person ‘s‘) or ‘the imageS show’ (plural ‘s‘). This is a common mistake.

So throughout most of your description for your IELTS process diagram, you should be using the passive voice.
This is difficult as some verbs cannot take the passive. For example, 'to go' cannot be passive, so it is kept in the active voice:

This is why you need to make sure you practice the passive so you know exactly how to use it.
Also, as you will see from the description, it is more usual to to comment on who or what is doing the action so the 'by " phrase is excluded.
Here is the same example description with uses of the passive highlighted:
Carbon is also released back into the atmosphere, however, through various means. One is when animals and plants respire, and another is when humans burn fossil fuels in cars and factories. All this carbon enters the atmosphere as CO2. It is then reabsorbed by plants, and the cycle begins again.

When describing any of the chart questions you shouldn’t use the passive, but when describing a process you may have to.
However, the passive is only used to describe man-made processes. If you are given a natural process you should use the active, rather than the passive.
